Over the years, the Shopify platform has progressively grown in popularity. Based on BuiltWith use data, the CMS has more than doubled in popularity since October 2017. Shopify is now used by 3.65 percent of the top 10,000 websites and 2.62 percent of the top 100,000.
While the data speaks for itself, I would also like to tell you about my personal success using Shopify. I used Shopify to set up a print of demand shop for a close friend which started generating revenue in the first month itself. For anyone who has run a business, you will know that this is quite difficult to achieve. Yet it was possible as I focused on search engine optimisation and generated a lot of traffic to the site.
Figuring out how to attract buyers is always a challenge faced by new businesses. However, this is becoming easier with new tools and avenues for optimising your site so that it ranks higher in search results. In this article, I will discuss everything you need know about Shopify SEO to increase traffic and maximise sale through your online store.

Use the Right Keywords
Keywords occur in people’s search requests on search engines. For example, a customer in the United States might want to purchase white socks. White socks and USA would be the keywords in this search. To improve the visibility of your website in search results, you need to research and figure out what keywords your buyers could use to locate your items and include those phrases in your content. Page titles, meta descriptions, ALT tags, and the body text of a page are the four primary locations where you may add keywords to increase search engine optimization for your online business. All of these are taken into account when showing search results.
Google’s Keyword Planner is a fantastic tool for assessing keyword search volume and generating keyword suggestions. It’s a good idea to be acquainted with Google’s own Keyword Planner. When we talk about search “volume,” we’re referring to the estimated number of monthly searches for a certain term. Set one target keyword to get the best results.

You should create sub-headings in your webpage to improve readability. Make sure you only have one H1 tag on each of your pages. H1 (header 1) tags are frequently used as a page’s main headline and normally includes the primary keywords of the page. Avoid manually inserting an H1 tag anywhere else on the page since Shopify page titles are the default H1 tag for pages generated using Shopify. You can have multiple H2 – H6 tags.
Write Relevant Titles
You should keep your page titles under 60 characters. Google currently only shows the first 50–60 characters of most page titles, so make sure your primary keywords are towards the start of your page title. Also, keep in mind that you may make your page title appear more like a list than an editorial title or a blog. This will help customers in easily identifying your shop from other search results.
Optimise Content Description
Your product description should tell your buyers everything they need to know about the product and convince them to purchase in. This should highlight the benefits of the product for your ideal customer. Here are some examples of what Shopify considers as good product descriptions:
Include Keywords in URL
Using URLs which contain the relevant keywords can help in improving the visibility of your website. In Shopify, the page title becomes the automatic URL for your page. I will advise you to only use the relevant keywords in your page URL and remove all the filler words (such as of, the, etc.) to keep it short and to the point.
Optimise Image Text
As per recent studies, Google image searches amount for 28% of the total searches on Google. Due to this, it is important that you add alt text and use relevant filenames for your images. This will help in improving the search result for the image. Make sure you use descriptive text for both the alt text and filename.
You should use your keywords in a consistent way. This will help in ensuring that your product page is logical and consistent. As per Shopify, you should use this example formula:
Keyword 1 – Shop for Keyword 2 – Store Name
T-shirts – Shop for T-shirts Online – Store
Optimize Title and Meta Description for Products
It is important that you write appropriate title and meta description for your products. While you can use the description provided by supplier websites, it is advisable that you come up with original descriptions. This will improve your site’s SEO and add to the user experience.
While using keywords in your title and description, make sure that these keywords fit organically. This will ensure that the focus is on the relevant keywords. This is the appropriate time for you to reconsider the validity of your keywords and make any required changes.
Optimise Site Structure
You should keep some basic SEO points in mind while adding anything, such as menus or links to your site. The search engine will find it easier to read and rank your site if the site navigation is logical and organised. Shopify already ensures that the content in your website is categorised and follow a logical order. You can improve the site structure further by adding a link in every page, keeping every page within three clicks from the home page, using descriptive text in menus, adding descriptive link text to menus. Boost Site Speed
Increasing site speed will ensure that your customers get what they want as soon as possible and don’t leave your site because of delay. You can design a fancy website but it is quite pointless if your potential customers cannot access the content. Customers will not be frustrated if your site is simple to use and everything goes rapidly. This implies they’re more inclined to stay on your site longer. In order to increase the site speed, you should use a fast, mobile-friendly theme, compress photos, delete any applications you’re not using, and avoid using slow to load features such as sliders.
Focus on Link Building
Link building is a powerful way of optimising your website and improving search results. Buying links is not a good option as it does not help with your site’s SEO . Instead, you can use other organic methods for link building.
You should always look out for opportunities to list your online store on other websites. You can do this by building relationships with different websites and blogs such that they share your store’s link on their platform. Apart from this, you should also focus on keeping your store updated and trendy so that users want to share it.
You can also use mention.com to find places where you have already been mentioned but your site has not been linked. After this, you can reach out to the user mentioning your product and ask for your site to be linked.
Use Google Search Console
A sitemap.xml file is generated automatically for all Shopify stores and contains links to all of your goods, product photos, pages, collections, and blog articles. Follow this guide for submitting your sitemap to Google.
Search engines utilise this file to index your site so that your store’s pages show up in search results. Google will better locate and index pages on your site if you submit your sitemap files to Google Search Console. Shopify Basic plan only generates the site map for the site’s primary domain. If you are using Shopify Advanced or Plus plan, you can generate different region specific domains and submit different sitemap files to Google Search Console.

Market Your Store
I will advise you to not rely only on your product descriptions and take active steps to market your content. Take the effort to generate fresh material that enhances your entire user experience, and you’ll have a lot more success.
It might be difficult to decide what to write about, but it doesn’t have to be. Make a list of everything your customers ask you or anything you believe they would want to know. This is your chance to share some real insight which can’t be included in the product information. Your content is an opportunity to introduce clients and potential consumers to your business and build brand loyalty for your product. This will also help your products to rank of a wide range of keywords.
You can create a blog on your Shopify website and share this content. While marketing, try to think of information that your users are interested in. For example, if you sell handmade soap, then you can write blog articles such as “Top 10 Places Selling Best Handmade Soap” and feature your own products.
You can also use different social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest for marketing. It is incredibly important to build a dedicated audience base for a new product line. This will help in creating awareness for the product and allow potential customers to easily find you.
