7 tips on how to improve your WordPress SEO
7 tips on how to improve your WordPress SEO
WordPress is one of the most used CMS systems out there, and it’s already very SEO-optimised out of the package. However, you still need to do a ton of work if you want those good positions on your keywords.
Here are 7 tips on how to improve your SEO using WordPress. I use all of the methods with great success.
1. Keywords research
Before you start spending time on the tasks which will elevate your SEO profile, keywords research is a must. It will make you get an idea of what keywords you need to focus on for success. You might have ideas, and that’s perfect, but the ideas you have about your industry, doesn’t necessarily mean people search for it.
Write down all the keywords you can think of, and then afterwards find an SEO tool like Ubersuggest. Then put in your keywords and check the traffic compared to the difficulty on the keyword. Work with the keywords with the most traffic and lowest difficulty, to begin with.
2. Yoast SEO works perfectly with your WordPress SEO
Yoast is a great plugin to elevate your SEO options in WordPress. WordPress is out of the package, already very SEO optimised. However installing Yoast will make you able to write great SEO content, customised meta tags and much more. Yoast opens the option to make meta tags on each post type you have. You basically customise your appearance on Google. What pages you want to be indexed, and not.
3. Write consistent content to achieve better WordPress SEO
It’s no secret writing blog posts is a very effective way of creating content. There are some different things you need to be observant of.
Starting with the title, it needs to be intriguing for the user to click. Using numbers had really proven to be a big conversion helper.
The body text needs to be quality content, base your content on research if possible.
Last thing; backlinks. It’s so important to get backlinks to your posts. You get this by doing outreach. If you write an article where you mention another company, reach out to them to try to get a backlink to your post.
4. SEO optimise all your pages through a website checker
Ubersuggest I mentioned earlier, is also a tool for a website audit. A website audit is basically a process where your website is checked through, by a set of parameters. There are a ton of free ones out there, the more you use, the better. Run all your pages through website audits to fix all the errors they show you, this will result in a better SEO result in the end.
You can check through the Wastecontrol case where I optimised every page from a technical point of view.
5. Use an SEO tool to keep track of your keywords
You should at this point have some keywords you’re focusing on. Find an SEO tool that fits your need and then plot in your list of keywords. You will get an amazing insight into what pages links for different keywords. You will also experience pages ranks for wrong keywords, these you need to fix. Read them through and you will not be in doubt why they are ranking for the wrong keywords.
Whatever SEO tool you end up using, the tool will also be able to help you with a ton of other stuff like suggestions your keywords you should strive to rank on. Weekly, if not daily website audits. Reporting and much more.
6. Google Search Console
Google Search Console is also a type of SEO tool. No matter what it’s a good idea to set it up. You will get insights like the average position of specific keywords. If your website is having any issues when Google tries to crawl it. You can also see what keywords you rank on, where you get appearance and clicks. It’s free and takes a few minutes to set up.
7. Multi-channel your blog posts to help your WordPress SEO
The last tip is for your blog posts. When you have written a piece. You need to get it out there. A good idea is always to post it as many places possible, where it makes sense. Social media is a great way to get it out, but you should also think in terms of partnerships, newsletters and channels in that category.
These 7 tips are very “scratching the surface” tips, and none of them is debt going, however, they will get you started in your SEO process. Later on, you should definitely dig down deep into the different areas of SEO to really skyrocket your traffic.
I always say, there are 2 categories in SEO. The technical part, and the content part. For the content part to be able to skyrocket your visitor numbers, the technical part needs to be in order.
