When you’ve written a great blog post for your website, you want to attract as many eyes as possible. Still, when you look at it three months after publishing it to check its performance, you find nobody has seen it.

Now you wonder why? Yes, in today’s crowded SERPs, creating content is not enough. You need to optimize your content if you want it to rank.

Still, it does not mean optimizing your content only for Google. No, you need to optimize content to make it readable and lead to conversions.

Aah, I can see you are confused. Then, this content optimization guide is for you.

What is Content Optimization?

Content optimization is improving the quality and relevance of your content on a website or other digital platform to increase its visibility and search engine ranking.

You use appropriate keywords, meta descriptions, and other on-page SEO techniques to achieve this. The aim is to make your website more user-friendly, increase its search engine visibility, and drive more traffic to it.

Creating high-quality, well-structured content relevant to your target audience can help improve your business’s online presence and generate more leads, leading to sales.

Why is Content Optimization Important for SEO?

Optimizing your content for search engines is crucial to ranking high on Google.

If you do not optimize your content for Google’s algorithms, it will not rank well, even if it is written fantastically from a reader’s viewpoint.

Advantages of Ranking High on Google:

  • Attracts more backlinks
  • It helps expand your audience
  • It will generate more leads
  • It helps build credibility 

It brings me to the question: why does my content not rank?

  • My article lacks a comprehensive level of detail on the topic.
  • The absence of a clear and structured heading has made it difficult for Google’s bots to understand your article.
  • The title tag does not accurately represent the content of the article.

Improving the readability of your content enhances audience engagement and helps establish trust with readers, positioning your brand as an authority.

It is easier to trust a brand that invests time in content creation and produces legible content than one that publishes barely readable content.

Optimizing your content for conversions is vital if you want to maximize the output of your efforts.

You may not create the best-converting copy the first time, so it is essential to tweak your headings, target new keywords, and improve your call to action (CTA).

Furthermore, conversion objectives may change over time, and you want to ensure your content evolves.

The Methodology Behind Content Optimization

During a State of Content Marketing Report by Semrush, they analyzed 24K articles, ranking them in the top 10 results on Google.

They found a standard correlation between the highest-ranking articles and a score between 8 and 10 for readability, SEO, originality, consistency, and tone of voice.

They found that 34% of ranking articles on the first page had perfect scores, compared to the 13% that scored poorly.

In their research, they classified the scores as follows:

  • Content scoring between 8 and 10 is considered the top-performing material.
  • Anything that scores below six is considered low-performing content.
  • The scoring system identifies the highest and lowest-performing content on a scale of 1-10.

We can conclude that a significant link exists between high-quality content, search engine preferences, and user preferences amidst the extensive digital information available.

It brings me to the following question: How can you optimize your content for backlinks, shares, SEO, and conversions?

How to Optimize Content For Search Engine Optimization

Most marketers today optimize content for search engine rankings to help increase the quantity and quality of reaching unpaid traffic to their websites.

Still, it is not just about writing content but also updating outdated content first. There is more to content optimization to get click-through rates.

It all starts with the research phase, the writing phase, and the publishing phase.

So, let’s dive into them and see how you can optimize outdated content to get conversion rates.

Research Phase

The research phase is the first and foremost step to achieving excellent user intent. But why do this?

Google gives your website a score based on all its content. Better-performing content will have a high score.

While you can write new content, it also helps optimize your outdated content pieces, known as content pruning.

Steps To Find Content Decaying

The first step is to find the content you want to update. You will use your Google Search Console for this.

  1. Click on the search results in GSC.
  2. Then, compare the last six months to the previous six months.
  3. Click on the pages to sort them by the biggest amount of lost clicks.

Great! Now you have your first article, and you want to do content optimization for SEO.

Competitor Research 

The next step is to use your target keyword for your blog post and search for it on Google.

Why do you do this? You will immediately get an idea of the search intent and ranking.

Now, open up the top 3 ranking blog posts for the topic, and study what your competitors are doing.

Note: Your content often becomes irrelevant when it sits online, as the methods you discussed can be outdated or new elements are available that you are not covering.

Analyzing the top 3 ranking results will help you determine why your relevant content is not ranking. 

Pro Tip: Remember to disregard forums when doing your research.

Now that you have the first three results, you must review each one to check its sections or headings. Please take note of all the headings and document them.

A great way to do this is to use a Chrome extension like Detailed to help ease the process.

The next step is to remove all your duplicates. You can use ChatGPT to do this, and you will have relevant headings.

Now, you compare your headings with your headings and note all the missing headings.

Also, check the top 3 ranking websites to note if they use supporting content you lack.

Check for missing visual elements, like illustrations, lists, tables, infographics, etc.

The next step is to return to your Google Search Console filter on the URL you are working on and look for queries to get impressions.

If you’re getting impressions but not many clicks, look for relevant topics or questions and note them down. You may not be covering them well enough or at all.

The last step is to open ChatGPT or Google Gemini. It will compare the top 3 ranking websites with yours and tell you what they cover and what you don’t.

Now, you have all the research you need to improve your content. But before you start the writing phase, you must do a few other things.

Keyword Research 

Relevant keywords help whether you write new content to reach your target audience or update old ones.

Google’s algorithm has evolved and now focuses not solely on a single keyword but also on the overall topic and context of the target keywords.

You can use a keyword research tool like KeySearch to optimize SEO content. The tool will provide you with additional relevant keywords with potential volume to SEO difficulty to include in your content.

The best way is to choose a keyword representing your content with realistic keyword difficulty and decent traffic.

Writing Phase: Optimizing Content For Search Engine Rankings

Now that you have completed your research, it is time to optimize your content, adding the relevant keywords and content for your target audience.

Pro Tip: To optimize your content for SEO, I suggest using a tool like MarketMuse or Frase. These tools provide a content strategy and information about your target keyword.

First Step: Check Your CTR

The best place to start is with your title and meta descriptions. If your CTR is below 3%, optimizing them can help. You do this by looking at the other ranking websites. Look at what they use as titles, as it works for them. Work on personal experience with your primary keyword in the title where possible.

Second Step: The Intro

For the intro, I recommend following the SPEAR framework from Jamie I.F.

The intro must include the pain points, show you have the expertise to answer queries and link this to your description.

Third Step: The Content

Now, while in there, you can add your missing headlines, write content for them, and ensure that all the other sections are up to date. Then, fact-check your content to ensure it is up-to-date and still relevant. Also, try to include experience and expertise in your sections and ensure you write actively.

Pro Tip: I prefer to use 2,5 lines per section of the text to improve the readability, but it is still up to you what you do.

Make your headings descriptive to immediately understand what the section is about related to the types of content provided.

Another tip is to add one if you do not have an FAQ section. If relevant questions are available, you can add one. It is excellent for readers who want quick answers to questions.

In Frase, you can find a question section about your topic.

SEO Tips to Enhance Outdated Content

At the beginning, I mentioned that you can do extra keyword research to gather long-tail keywords to add to your content. Now is the time to add them in the title, meta description, H1 tag, and image alt tags.

A great tip is to include them naturally throughout your content. Also, be careful of keyword stuffing, as it provides a terrible user experience and will penalize your site.

Remember to add internal links, as they are essential with quality backlinks. They make it easier for search bots to crawl and gain authority between pages. The more internal links you have, the better.

When optimizing your pages, you can list all the pages to link them naturally and go to each page to ensure it links back to the optimized page.

Lastly, ensure you add visual content to your content optimization strategy before publishing. Are the images in the content original?

If not, use original images as much as possible. A recent case study showed that original images are essential.

Adding great visual content like video content, relevant images, infographics, and more will give you more online visibility.

Publishing Your Content to Your Website

Once you have completed your SEO content, it is time to upload it to your website.

If you have an SEO plugin like Rank Math, ensure the FAQ section uses schema. Then, recheck your content using a spell check to eliminate any errors.

Also, remove fluff words like “that” and cliches. Ensure the sentences are short, and write as you speak.

Then, vary the sentence length to prevent it from becoming monotonous. Remember my 2.5 lines per section tip, and ensure the content is engaging.

Once done, you can go into Google Search Console to re-index it, which is unnecessary.

Also, ensure those social share buttons are available to reach other potential customers.

As you know, you want your content to reach potential customers and need to convert. But how do you create content for conversions?

Two Types of Conversion

With conversion optimization, you aim to increase the percentage of your website visitors who take the desired actions, such as purchasing, filling out a form, or subscribing to a newsletter.

Within this process, it is essential to use both types of conversions – primary and secondary.

Primary Conversion

The primary conversion is your website’s main goal, which brings in revenue or leads directly to sales. It could be a product purchase, a service booking, or a lead form submission.

Secondary Conversion

Conversely, the secondary conversion may not lead to immediate revenue, but it can still be valuable in the long run.

It often involves getting people to sign up for a newsletter or follow social media accounts, where they can be nurtured and converted over time through targeted messaging and content.

When you implement both, you can increase your chances of success in building a loyal customer base.

Some of the best strategies to sound persuasive is to make your content enticing and include the following:

  • Incorporate social validation to demonstrate that real people love your product.
  • Use a friendly tone to create a positive impression on your readers.
  • Utilize case studies to showcase how your product works effectively.

You can combine these points in your content or include a quote from someone to explain the product.

Improve The CTA

For high-converting content, you must have at least one call to action. You can use CTAs in different forms, for example:

  • You can encourage email sign-ups
  • Link to your relevant products 
  • You can encourage users to use the free trial

Typically, you place your CTA at the end of your blog post or landing page. Or you can add it to the middle of your blog post.

  • You fail to improve reader experience: Instead of spending hours on content SEO, spend time writing engaging content, as it can lead to huge traffic and bounce rates.
  • Forgetting to add internal and external links: Both are incredible ways to optimize content simultaneously.
  • You over-optimize content: Do not go too far in stuffing your content with keywords, and avoid it at all costs to prevent a Google penalty.
