KeywordSpy Review: Recover From Google Core Updates

KeywordSpy surprised me pleasantly, and you’ll also see in this KeywordSpy review how I used it to analyse my content for missing points as to why my website was decreasing in traffic.

KeywordSpy has one of the most thorough keyword research tools I’ve played with, and if you combine this with their topical cluster tool, you have a solid foundation for your content and website.

Let’s get into it.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • One of the keyword research tools with the most data per keyword.
  • The topical cluster tool uses AI, and it’s one of the best I’ve tried.
  • The editor is not great, and I wouldn’t use it to write my content.

Pros And Cons Using KeywordSpy

There are 2 tools named KeywordSpy, and the tool I’m reviewing is the KeywordSpy tool with no spacing in the name. Nevertheless, overall, I was impressed, and it has huge potential but some flaws as well.

Here are my pros and cons after using KeywordSpy

What Is KeywordSpy

KeywordSpy website

KeywordSpy is an SEO tool which uses AI to enhance your experience using it. You can use it to recover from Google Core Updates by improving your content.

They offer a keyword research tool with many data points on each keyword, such as trends, search volume, difficulty score and more.

If you’re looking for an editor to give live feedback on your content, this can be done with KeywordSpy.

And yes, I could go on and on. There is so much to cover with KeywordSpy. It’s great, so let’s get into it.

KeywordSpy Review Features

The features are what makes an SEO product, so let’s dive into every one of them and see how good they are and what they’re good for.

Keyword Discovery: Find Trending Keywords

Keyword Discovery - Find Trending Keywords

This is a super interesting feature, and when you start your keyword research, you’re able to choose between a lot of settings to make the results customised for you.

You choose between the following difficulty modifiers:

  • Are you a top-level expert in your niche?
  • Do you plan on using AI content?
  • Do you have a high domain authority?

The reason why these are important is because if you’re a high domain authority, then you can pursue all keywords.

And if you’re usingΒ AI content, you want to target keywords where the entrance barrier is a bit lower.

From there, you enter yourΒ keyword, chooseΒ locationΒ andΒ languageΒ and get results.

And then you get your results.

keyword discovery results

I got 15740 keywords to search forΒ espresso coffee, which is super impressive.

Depending on your authority, I recommend you sort by the lowest difficult score and target these keywords individually.

I did find it a little difficult to find low-competition keywords, as I couldn’t easily sort by difficulty score.

Sometimes you get more data points than others.

Per keyword, you get the following data points:

  • Google Ads competition
  • YOY Change
  • Google Ads Avg. CPC
  • Avg. Monthly Search Volume
  • Traffic Value
  • Trend Value
  • Keyword ROI
  • Keyword Difficulty
  • Final ROI

So if you’re looking for a different approach to keyword research or you’re looking to find trending keywords, then I’ll recommend giving keyword discovery a try.

Keyword Spy: Spy On Your Keywords

Keyword Spy - Spy On Your Keywords

Now if you want to take it a step deeper with your keyword research, and you have a specific keyword you want to target, then you can run a spy report.

The spy report tells you everything from what words you should use, in what order you should use them, how many times and much more.

Pro-tip

It’s important to see these as guidelines, not as facts you need to follow to the point. Your content still needs to sound natural.

You need to give the report some time, but when it’s done analysing, it has analysed your query on 6 major and smaller points.

The 6 major points are:

  • RankBrain
  • BERT
  • Neural Matching
  • Image Entity
  • DOM Vector Competitors

RankBrainΒ is part of Google’s ranking algorithm, and KeywordSpy has tried to imitate what they look for in content targeting your query.

The same goes forΒ BERT, it’s part of Google’s ranking algorithm, so your analysis is also based on this. It includes words and phrases you need to cover in your content.

Image EntityΒ shows you images performing well in the SERP. Use these as inspiration and take your original photos if possible.

DOM VectorΒ is where you can compare your DOM size with your competitors to see if it affects your rankings.

CompetitorsΒ is a complete overview of your competitors, where you can see their scores, AI predictability, HEEAT, and much more. It’s a super thorough analysis.

Article Builder: Write Your Blog Posts

Article Builder - Write Your Blog Posts

Now to the article builder or the editor, where you can use your keyword spy report to write your content.

You can either use the AI, or you can write it yourself.

I will not recommend you use the AI in its current state. I tested it, and it left me with super long paragraphs which were impossible to read.

You get analyses on yourΒ readability,Β sentimentΒ andΒ predictableΒ scores, and you can useΒ AIΒ to improve these.

And the entire analysis you did using Keyword Spy is available on the right-hand side.

It’s not the best UI experience, but you have all the data to write a great article.

Helpful Content Update/AI Recover Tool

Helpful Content Update_AI Recover Tool

Now, we’re at the tool you’ve been waiting for. This is a tool where you enter your language and your target query. Checkmark the elements you want feedback on and run the analysis.

I tried the query I’ve been testing throughout this article, checked all the helpful content update points, and ran an analysis.

It uses AI, which KeywordSpy believes that Google uses to rank websites to give you feedback on what to include to write a better article.

So, in the end, you’ll end up with feedback like this:

helpful content update feedback

So while it doesn’t take your content and gives feedback based on that, it takes a step up and showcases the content you need to focus on.

What you need to do with your content to show authority expertise and all the elements Google are looking for.

Topical Cluster: Create A Topical Map With AI

Topical Cluster - Create A Topical Map With AI

Now this was the best surprise of them all. When I saw this, I was super sceptical.

I’ve tried many topical cluster tools, fromΒ WriterZenΒ to simple ChatGPT, and they don’t do a great job at this, but this tool was incredible.

I tried technical niches, a travel niche and a newer niche, and overall it did phenomenally. It was a bit difficult for the algorithm with the newer niche, but it gave me a useful output.

For this article, I continued to test with espresso coffee as my niche, and it also performed well here, as you can see on the image.

What I love about this is that you get an overview of your topics, and then you can either dive further into a topic or you can start to build your full topical map from here.

If you’re looking for a course on topical maps, I can recommendΒ Topical Maps Unlocked, I took it myself, and it’s incredible at explaining it all from scratch to finish.

Other SEO Features

keyword spy beta tools

They have a collection of smaller SEO tools to do specific use cases. For example, if you want to target aΒ featured snippet, they have an SEO tool.

If you want to getΒ outlinesΒ for a query you want to target, they also cover this.

You can also improve your content with theΒ Content ImproverΒ feature and more.

Here is a list of the smaller SEO tools:

  • URL/Title/Meta/H1
  • AI Detection
  • Content Improver
  • Win Featured Snippet
  • Outline/Subheaders
  • Query Intent Finder

Who Is KeywordSpy Made For?

KeywordSpy is made for website owners who want to improve their level of content, which anyone focusing on SEO wants.

If you’ve experienced a drop in traffic after a Google core update, KeywordSpy is also perfect to ask you those difficult questions about your content.

If you want a more in-depth keyword research analysis, I recommend KeywordSpy.

I willΒ notΒ recommend KeywordSpy for writing your content, but use the analysis and write your content usingΒ FraseΒ orΒ MarketMuse.

Alternatives To KeywordSpy

KeywordSpy is an all-around SEO tool which covers a lot of angles, and even though I don’t want to compare it to Ahrefs and Semrush, they have some similarities.

However, I’ve tried to look deeper to find the closest alternatives.

LowFruits

LowFruits has a lot of features surrounding keyword research, but what many miss about LowFruits is that they have analysis tools as well.

It’s great for finding niches, finding competitors to your website and how you should angle your content. It’s great for finding search intent as well.

RankIQ

RankIQ reminds me a lot of KeywordSpy, they both have a unique angle to keyword research, and they both have an editor to write content in, which could use a brush-up to make it more appealing.

RankIQ’s keyword research is a bit better, in my opinion, and the editor features. But KeywordSpy has more tools in general which improves your SEO performance.

Wrap-Up: Is KeywordSpy Worth It?

Yes, KeywordSpy is worth signing up for a trial for 7 days and running your content and website through it.

Whether it’s worth the $54 afterwards is difficult to define. Don’t get me wrong, with KeywordSpy, you get a lot of unique features, but if those features are worth $54 for me, it is difficult to say.

The topical cluster feature, for example, is a one-time thing. You use it once for your website, and then you’re done.

The content analysis and keyword research are something you use more frequently, but you must try KeywordSpy and decide for yourself if it fits your workflow and is worth the $54 for you.

I like to compliment my other content optimisation tools with KeywordSpy.

My Last Take

So, to sum up, if you need in-depth keyword research to find trending keywords or generate a topical map, then KeywordSpy is for you.

I like to use it as a secondary look into my content to ensure I’ve covered the subject from all angles.

Pros

  • One of the most thorough keyword research tools with trending data and more.
  • The topical cluster report took me by surprise. It's really good!
  • The Google Core Update tool gives you some insights into your content you wouldn't have thought of.

Cons

  • The AI to generate content is not good to use, and it generates miles-long paragraphs which are impossible to read.
  • The UX in the editor needs to be improved because it feels clunky.
